Who We Are
Store to Door is a volunteer based, non-profit organization that has served
Portland area seniors and people with disabilities since 1989 with a low-cost,
personalized grocery shopping and delivery service so that they can maintain their
independence and self-sufficiency in their own homes.
What We Do
Each Tuesday volunteers take well over 140 grocery
orders from clients. On Wednesdays and Thursdays volunteers shop at Fred Meyer’s
Stadium store in Portland where a cart filled with each order is checked through
and packed for delivery. Delivery volunteers go over the order with the client
for accuracy and return items when necessary. They help those needing assistance
in putting groceries away, taking back bottles for recycle, and tabulating
deductions for coupon redemption. The client pays the bill plus a modest fee at
the time of delivery.
Who We Serve
Approximately 80% of our clients are elderly and
20% are disabled and
under the age of 65. For many, the service is essential in their ability to live
independently rather than in an institutionalized setting or in the care of
family. We bring those receiving Meals on Wheels or living in communities where
meals are provided essentials such as prescriptions, household items, and
supplementary food and beverages. Store to Door is an authorized in-home service provider for clients with entitlements such
as Medicaid whose delivery fees are paid from government funds. We are the
alternate payee for those receiving food benefits through the use of the Oregon
Trail Card (formerly food stamps).
Benefits of Service
Besides providing direct service, Store to Door volunteers interact
personally with clients. The agency is in the unique position of having weekly
phone contact and visits to the homes of people who often live isolated lives.
Multnomah County Aging Services has enlisted Store to Door in their Gatekeeper
program to serve as a resource in identifying frail elderly who might be at risk
and in need of additional social services. Store to Door provides support for families and friends of our clients. As
the elderly continue to be the fastest growing segment of our population, family
members are often torn between their responsibility to an aging parent, their
work, their children, and their own needs. Store to Door is able to relieve
these caregivers of at least one time-consuming chore. Relatives who live far from Portland feel more assured
knowing that our volunteers are seeing their loved one regularly.
Goals
Store to Door continues to make itself more visible in the community so that
it can increase its volunteer base and serve a growing number of people who need
assistance.
Staffing
There is a professional staff of eight. The executive director and office
manager are full-time with the rest being part-time employees.
There are approximately 100 dedicated volunteers
who range in age from teens to people in their 80’s. They bring a wide variety
of skills and experience to their work and make the agency the success it is.
Financial Support
Delivery fees are 10% of the total grocery bill
minus any prescription medications. We depend on community
support through corporate and financial grants and the contributions of
individuals to supplement costs so that we can remain a presence in the Portland
area.
